Article sur la race de Mme Loiseau -- 2001
L'élevage du Barbet depuis 1983 n'a pas été conduit selon un plan élaboré pour la bonne raison qu'en 1983 , des barbets , il n'y en avait plus , sauf à l'élevage di Barbochos Reiau de prouvenco , mis au ban par le président de race autoproclamé de l'époque.Je parlerai de cet élevage plus loin.Ce sont deux chiens Lynx et Sérynoire confirmés à titre initial , donc bien dans le type mais sans origines connues qui sont à la base de l'élevage des Marécages du Prince.Que faire avec seulement un mâle et une femelle ?Des portées bien sûr !!!!( Lynx n’a pas reproduit de 1980 à au moins 1984, alors que son nom figure sur les pedigrees)Ainsi naîtront entres autres, en 1983 Umide et surout Ulyssia en 1984 Voyelle et Vertige , en 1987 Calypso et Caline , mais ensuite il faut riquer le tout pour le tout et faire saillir les soeurs par les frères et les filles par leur père.Ainsi sont nées Balzane et Bédouine ( Vertige hors Umide ) Cobra (Lynx hors Voyelle ) et d'autres sans doute mais qui n'ont pas laissé de traces notables .Bédouine couverte par Cobra produira Elite qui est la base de l'élevage des Champs Galants . ( il y a là une très forte consanguinité ).En 1985 , avec Umide saillie par un Barbet gris ; Ussard dont je ne connais pas les origines les Marécages du Prince , ont produit Athos , lequel avec Voyelle a donné à son tour Duel au Soleil qui est à l'origine d'une nombreuse descendance.Duel, est un caniche selon le site des pedigrees)Mais le pas le plus important a été franchi par l'élevage des Saute Ruisseaux qui avait acquiq Ulyssia et l'a faite couvrir par un grand caniche noir :Baron du Prince des Hortillons , faisant fi de l'interdiction de Mme Brestecher et réalisant ainsi la première retrempe avec un caniche .Dans la portée , ont fait souche ; Espadone Eron noir et surtout Esturgeonne acquis par l'élevage acquise par l'élevage des Canailles de Verbaux Estrugeonne couverte en 1990 par un autre grand caniche blanc Bruss du Haut Paquis ,donnera naissance à un chien médiocre acquis par l'élevage du Domaine du Repaire ( conservatoire des races françaises pour l'ONC ) qui n'osera jamais le faire reproduire, à Fernis acquis par l'élevage du Partage des Eaux qui donnera avec Calypso ( Lynx hors Sérynoire ) :Huron et Hoggarth , à Flibuste qui reproduira avec Fusée ( Duel hors Clalypso ) pour l'élevage du Pré Levèque , en donnnat entre autres . Galion ,Gibus ( acquis par les Malabris de Sologne ) , et Hébene qui restera à l'élevage.Esturgeonne couverte en 1991 par Blacky , un barbet confirmé à titre initial , donnera naissance à Girolle noire qui reproduira pour les Malabris de Sologne .Gin pour le Royaume des Chiens d'Eau , Gaia pour le Domaine du Repaire et Gallo qui restera à l'élevage des Canailles de Verbaux. En 1992 cet élevage a eu une portée accidentelle : Gallo a sailli Luz , femelle Cao de Agua , une femelle de cette portée : Halix a finalement été confirmée barbette à titre initial par le juge confirmateur et non moins président du club de race ......Cette chienne a eu une descendance.A partir de ce moment et jusqu'à l'année 2000 , tous ces chiens produits à partir des seuls 7 chiens figurant en rouge dans ce texte : Lynx, Sérynoire,Ussard,Baron,Bruss,Blacky,Halix , se sont reproduit entre eux au hasard de leur proximité géographique ( souvent ) en évitant au mieux leur trop grande proximité parantale.Pour en revenir à l'élevage di Barbochos Reiau de prouvenco , dont je connais pas grand chose de l'année 2000 , je peux dire seulement qu'il est la suite de l'élevage du Dr Vincenti du Mas de la Chapelle et que plusieurs de ses chiesn sont à la base de l'élevage des Poppenspalers.En effet c'est seulement en 2000 que bravant l'interdiction faite aux éleveurs de barbets d'avoir ne serait-ce qu'un regard pour ces chiens que l'élevage Opus en O majeur ( Belgique ), avec Normandie Lointainne du Clan de l'Ours : [ Gallo hors Gigi ) Blacky hors Eurac ( Duel hors Balzane )] utilise pour la première fois un mâle :Poil d'Armagnac Poppenspalers il est suivi peu de temps après par l'élevage des Champs Galants qui utilise le pilier des Poppenspalers, : Hercule di Barbochos Reiau de prouvenco . La portée : Roméo,Ramsès,Ralph,Rhazel,Rani,Racaille,Roulis, agée de 13 mois est prometteuse et ceux de ses chiens qui se présenteront devant un juge devraient être confirmés.Voilà , ceci n'est pas un traité sur la génétique chez le chien , c'est un résumé de faits réels qui président à l'existence de tous les barbets vivants actuellement . Si des personnes qui liront ce résumé ont des précisions , desss corrections à y apporter j'en serai très contente car la connaissance des origines de nos barbets modernes me passionnent autant qu'un entomologiste qui découvre un insecte inconnu et l'ajoute à sa collection. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………History of the Barbet, by Françoise Loiseau. 2007
The history of the Barbet breed is not very clear. There is as many descriptions of the history of the barbet as persons who want to write a review . Nobody is agreement about what happened after the 2nd World War . For my part I could give you my own version , it would be only the 3rd or 4th one .
Between 1935 and 1941 under the kennel name ' du Mas de la Chapelle ', Dr Vincenti probably bred properly barbets from those out of the kennel ' de Floirac ' (who came from Mr Le Houelleur, a breeder from the North of France) . Dr Vincenti was breeding methodically and in respect of the standard applied at that time. The standard was very close to the contemporary standard. The only difference is the size which has increased. In the past, the size was 50 cm for females and 54 cm for males. Nowadays the standard is 53/61 cm for the females and 58/65 cm for the males .
If I am correct Dr Vincenti died in 1941 .
His daughter , Mrs Pètre , restarted the barbet's breeding in 1970, 30 years after the death of her father . During this time 3 generations of dogs were born and nobody knows how and with whom these dogs were bred as during this time ( 1940/1970 ) no barbets were registered at the LOF . On the rebuilt genealogy of Mrs Pètre , Quesop the sire of S'Gandar ( certified with unknown ancestors ) is listed as PWD but his origins are unknown .
Finally , the ancestors of the dogs who were bred between 1940 and 1970 were unknown. The dogs who were bred after 1970 were all certified but their pedigrees were not recorded.
In 1977 , J.C.H. was interested in the barbet but he thought the breed had disappeared. When he heard about Mrs Pètre and her barbets, he asked a friend to introduce him to her. This friend discouraged him from buying a dog from this kennel. Since this time J.C.H. always did all everything he could to prevent this woman from breeding her barbets .
Personally I know this woman since 2003 when she owned 3 old dogs. The oldest is a 15 years old bitch, Douma - she is small and with hair loss on her back. A second female, Hourri, who is 11 and in bad physical condition. The third dog is a 12 years old male Gabian who is also in bad physical condition. There is a young female Carlotta who is a gift from Rainer Georgii ( for me a gift this woman was not deserving ) . This bitch was bought by him from Ezia Zagone's litter in 2002 ( Fébus x Verveine ) .
All these dogs are tied by 6 meters of chain without contact between them . Yes, this woman is breeding for 33 years and nobody has thought about enclosing the property which located in edge of a large main road !!!!!!!
It's bring us back to today as Rainer Georgii, who met Mr. & Mrs. Pètre in 1992, and who bought in their kennel Hercule Di Barbochos Reiau de Prouvenco . The other dogs of Mrs Pètre : (Hourri , Héra , Douma, and Gabian) appear not to be certified and registered in France - as wrongly or rightly J.C.H. objected . It seems that Rainer Georgii was co-owner of these dogs and registered them at the VDH/VBBFL . Then he used these dogs to start his own kennel under the kennel name " Poppenspäler's " located in Germany . I named this French-German line the line B .
The dogs he bred are not really welcome in France because they are too small and not curly enough.
By which way some of the dogs he produced were at the top ?
The only official mix breeding allowed by the VDH was with a female PWD Elsa Do Lusiadas who was mated with Hercule. Ratzeputz , Ratafia , Retzina and Remy Martin born in 1995 are out of this breeding .
I bought in 2002 from R Georgii a beautiful bitch, Brandy (aka Rainette) born in 2000. This year 2007 she gave birth to her 4th and last litter . She is the mom of 30 beautiful puppies and some of them are now parents too .
R.Georgii is now an old man and he is no a longer breeding. But his kennel name will soon be revived in France with its new owner Céline Soulier.
This has been the history of the German side of the Barbet in France . I started with this side (French-German line before French line) as a tribute to R Georgii whose inspiration holding place of true rigour, breeds good quality barbets.
Now for the French line. In 1977 J.C.H. became interested in the breed. He felt the breed had disappeared and he didn’t trust Mrs Pètre's dogs to contribute to the reviving of the breed.
His first step was to contact all those which have a dog likely to help to reconstitute the breed. He brocasted the request through different media. He was disappointed to find only 3 females and 1 male from the 200 dogs he examined . Only a bitch, Serynoire and a male, Prince (Lynx) would produced interresting litters. These mating of these dogs are the beginning of the French line . I named this french line the line A .
In 1983 J.C.H. bought a bitch from the kennel ' les Marecages du Prince '. This bitch is Ulyssia who is out of Lynx and Serynoire . He asked at the French KC = SCC, (Central Canin Society), the right to do 2 official mix breeding with standard Poodles . The SCC allowed him to do the breeding . In 1989 Ulyssia is bred to a black standard poodle Baron de l'Ame du Prince des Hortillons . This litter would produced Espadone , EronNoir and Esturgeonne des Saute Ruisseaux . Esturgeonne would be mated in 1990 by the white standard poodle Bruss de Haut Paquis . From this litter only Flibuste des Canailles de Verbaux would produce puppies .
For those who were not allowed to do official mix breeding , what could they do ?
Brothers and sisters out of Lynx and Serynoire would be mated together. Lynx was also used as stud with his own daughters !!!!!!
One day a dog appears -- Duel Au Soleil ...Some said he was a poodle registered surreptitiously in a litter of barbets , although it was not officially confirmed.
In an other hand, Gallo, from the kennel “Canailles de Verbaux” mates accidentally the PWD Luz de Condinho in 1992 . The litter produce the female Halix, she is certified with unknown ancestors in 1994 by J.C.H.. She will have descendants.
From 2000 to 2003 , barbets out of the line A were mated with those of the line B, against the opinion of 2 or 3 French breeders irreducible in favour and difenders of JCH . These breedings, nevertheless, seem to work well.
From 2003 to 2007 the 2nd generation out of these crossing were born . It seems to occur well again . We little by little are losing the dominant black color ( introduced by the black poodle Baron and by Blacky certified with unknown ancestors in 1991, who was probably also a black poodle ) and seeing more and more brown barbets. We could also see the revival of the white markings ( and sometimes large white markings ) which was recessive in line B. We are also seeing more dogs with wavy coats ( which is not desired) . This wavy coat is also hidden in the line B !
Where are we going now ???
We are seeing a terrible disease coming from different kennels. I think of it as an orphan disease but some consider it epilepsy . We found the clean carriers but we don't know exactly which dogs were the carriers at the begnning . Last news : Now we know ! Saturday August 11 a person taking part at the evening meal for the French Club’s members, revealed that Duel des Marécages du Prince (1988-2004) owner Mme Christine Bisconte was epileptic. Mme Bisconte knew she never said anything and let her dog cover ! The symptoms of this disease are seizures . These seizure could appears at different ages. The age at onset varies from a dog to another and from one environment to another .
Using dogs from kennels with no history of the problems will reinforce the endogamy !
As with any genetically carried disease, it is important to identify which dogs have the disease.
Which are the truly unscathed breedings ?
Breeders need to communicate about this disease ?
I know some are still maintaining it is just a food allergy .
Are we needed like some breeds to have a single person ( not a breeder and not have any interest in breeding ) charged to collect information ( anonymously ) relating to this disease ?
That’s the only way to get a handle on the disease.
It is necessary to encourage the blood taking away bound for the University of Helsinki which proposes to work on the disease.
Moreover, the hips are not always perfect in the barbet. We bred it during years and years without to worry that so….. but endogamy, seizures, imperfect hips it is too many things at the same time. It is necessary to tack in the medium of all that and my opinion is : we must be more tolerant with the hips which by no means make suffer a barbet, even at the stage D.
